Team New Brunswick Claims Gold at 2025 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship

November 10, 2025 – The 2025 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship gold medallists, Team New Brunswick. Congratulations to : Rene Comeau, Jennifer Fenwick, Alex Robichaud and Katie Vandenborre.

The championship drought has ended. For the first time in 18 years, New Brunswick has claimed the national mixed curling title.

Team Rene Comeau from Fredericton won the championship at the 2025 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship held at Assiniboia Curling Club in Saskatchewan.

Comeau, vice-skip Jennifer Fenwick, second Alex Robichaud, and lead Katie Vandenborre from the Capital Winter Club in Fredericton earned a 6-5 victory over Team Sam Mooibroek of Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario on Saturday afternoon.

New Brunswick prevailed on a difficult final shot, navigating around the opposing stone in the top 12-foot and nudging the shot stone just enough for victory.

“What’s running through my head is I have two of the best sweepers in the world (Robichaud and Vandenborre). So, I had to trust them with it. It was a difficult shot. I could barely see a piece of the pin. I had to deliver a draw to the button and just move them slightly. What a team shot. What a way to finish it,” Comeau said.

New Brunswick gained the hammer in the fifth end with a blank. That ultimately positioned the team with the last rock for the final end. In the sixth, the team took advantage of a missed Team Mooibroek comearound, executing a draw for two.

“We said heading into the fifth that if it was a tied game, we would want a blank. It worked out that we had the chance to pursue the blank and we did it. It went exactly according to our game plan,” Comeau said. “And then that two-point score in six was massive. My sweepers – and a special shoutout to Katie – made that shot for me. I didn’t make that shot; they did. That gave us a huge advantage.”

Team Mooibroek handled the seventh end well. The team executed a back-house tap through a tight port, scoring two to even the game heading into the final frame. Ontario pressured New Brunswick at every turn in the eighth. But Team Comeau succeeded in what will be remembered as one of the most thrilling Canadian mixed competitions ever played.

This marks New Brunswick’s third Canadian Mixed title. The previous one came in 2007 with Team Terry Odishaw; the initial one came in 1994 with Team Grant Odishaw.

New Brunswick started with a first-end two-point score after Ontario missed its last-rock double. Ontario responded in the second, with skip Mooibroek making consecutive draws for two points. Both teams were forced in the third and fourth. New Brunswick drew for a single point, while Ontario missed two long angle raises on seven stones in the four-foot circle.

Team Comeau will represent Canada at the 2026 World Mixed Curling Championship (dates, location TBA by World Curling). The event returns to the calendar after being excluded due to Olympic qualifiers played this season. Canada leads all nations with three world gold medals. The 2024 event was in Aberdeen, Scotland.

“I’m going to get emotional. They’re three of my best friends. I’ve known them forever, competed with them. I wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else,” Comeau said.

Team Jason Ackerman of Saskatchewan earned the bronze, dominating the match throughout and recording an 8-3 victory over Team Sean Grassie of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
